In-flight Calling Possible or Not?

Have you ever given a thought on making or receiving phone call while flying from plane? Well, if no then you should. Making call from 35,000 of high altitude is hottest topic these days. There is lot of issues making headlines under this debate of letting passenger to make use of electronic device or not while on such high attitude. After recent comment by chairman of Federal Communication Commission ‘Tom Wheeler’, this topic is gaining good amount of attention.

The FCC higher authority, are already to make decision by taking users opinion on this topic, whether to allow use of electronic device or not? The agency is totally into this discussion, whether to lift ban on usage of electronic device or not, after their recent discussion they might be allowing passenger to utilize portable electronic device below 10,000 feet or so.

But to have a practical view on this topic, use of cell phones should not be allowed as it can create tremendous nuisance. A vote appeal was also taken on this topic, many citizens and airline company , voted against allowing use of electronic device on plane, as it would create disruption to signal and plane.

Apart from this whole debate whether to allow or not. There is still a question, whether the electronic device will work on such high altitude? Think of someone placing an order of food from plane. But have you ever though, cell phone will be able to capture frequency or network. Today’s mobile are greatly designed to stand with rough and smooth path, but they are designed for ground usage, also the tower broadcast signals laterally to ground level, signals fails to reach at high altitude.

The speed of commercial jet flights is very difficult to grab a network where a signal is transferred from one network to other in milliseconds of time period. Hence, there is a need to get special technology that will place a call from any heights. The officials of FCC had questioned, whether to allow use of electronic device for communication or not.

The international airlines, have come up with an innovation of installing small cell tower on plane, the cell will be known as ‘picocell’. This ‘Picocell’, is designed to transmit calls from air to ground level. The usage of this picocell , was banned by United States, while other countries have no issue with picocell. But the FCC officials , have not given a clean approval for this, as they think this will damage interference with main navigational system on plane.

We should wait, for more discussion, as the final decision will be made by all international airlines and FCC board.
