Encryption - Making it ready for mainstream use!!!

Gone those days when people used to keep all their secret & confidential information in a briefcase which in turn was kept in some more secret place. Nowadays, people are finding it more convenient to either carry their vital documents along with them in their mobiles, laptops or tablets or uploading it on clouds or mailboxes. But with the rise in the use of digital devices to save crucial information, its security became a point of concern as mobiles & tablets carry the identity of its master!!!

Windows has come up with a solution to protect such documents by automatically encrypting all the files using BitLocker whole disk encryption. Especially, if you are using Windows RT 8.1 on a Surface or other similar RT devices, you don’t have to create a separate password or you don’t need to wait till the entire disk gets encrypted either, as soon as you sign in with a Microsoft account, the preset encryption will turn ON & the recovery key will be getting saved on ‘Skydrive’ account!!!!

Although RT tried to adopt the encryption for mainstream use, but sometimes it becomes annoying to deal with RT devices because of some operational problems. Whenever you run out of power or you try to restart your device to bring all the updates in any software into effect, your device won’t get started unless you type in the BitLocker recovery key!!!!.

Most rookie users find it very confusing as they are not aware of their Bitlocker recovery key!!! Even if they understand it by reading the instructions, they need to use another device like a laptop or mobile to go online & fetch the recovery key. If you haven’t signed into your Microsoft account, you still need to get your code sent to your mobile or email address by signing in to your account. It’s actually a very good means to know whether your account security has been compromised or not. If you are already done with this errand, all you have to is to log on to, http://www.skydrive.com/recoverykey & enter in the 20 digits long number on your device. Within a matter of a few seconds, your device will become alive & ready to act as per your command.

Although with the perspective of security, this concept seems to be very lucrative, but it becomes a real headache when you want to access your device for doing a minor job which hardly would take 10-15 minutes but you lack connectivity & another device & there you get stuck at a point of no return!!! All you have to do to avoid such embarrassment is either bookmark recovery site on your cell phone or write it down on a piece of paper & carry it always along with you!!!!

The current cryptography concept introduced by Microsoft for ordinary users proves that it has a strong potential to be a vital security aspect of any operating system meant for general purpose use provided Microsoft fixes out a few of the minor slip-ups. If they really wish to take their ‘Surface’ to a new level, smoothening the encryption concept is of utmost importance!!!!
