Google Maps for mobile 4.1 released

Google Maps has been updated to 4.1. Users with Android 1.6 and higher devices can get the latest update,It comes with a couple of new useful features:

New features include:

  • Updated search results page: The detailed search page got a major face life. New buttons have been added for map view, navigate, call, and street view. The reviews area has a slick looking colored chart to display star ratings and you can easily buzz about any place.
  • Swipe for more results: The tabs are now gone from the search results page and users can easily swipe between places. The scrolling is super smooth on my N1 and it has a nice feel as results snap over.
  • Latitude widget and Maps live wallpaper: I guess this is more eye candy than usefulness. The new Maps live wallpaper allows you to view live traffic on your homescreen. The Latitude widget shows updates for friends around your location.
  • Switch Google Accounts: Android 2.0 added support for multiple accounts and now you can switch them from within maps. This allows you to easily manage multiple identities.
  • Dark Map for Buzz: A new layer that darkens the map and makes buzz posts glow red.
  • More Ads: I don’t know if this is a new “feature” or not, but I am noticing a ton of new sponsored ads through out Google Maps when I perform a search. I think this started around version 3.4, but they definitely have more advertisers signed up now.

Just search for Google Maps in the Android Market, to download the version 4.1.

Google Nexus One Hands On

As the launch date of Google Nexus One is approaching, more details are emerging about it. Tnkgrl Mobile claims that she had a chance to has hands on with Nexus One/Google Phone, she shares quite a few details/specs about the device and its operation, most noticeable one is that Nexus One don’t support multitouch, not atleast in the two apps she tried (Browser and Google Maps).

Multitouch feature in Nexus One is little ambiguous, as both the hardware(HTC) and OS(Android) of phone fully support multitouch functionality, it’s also possible that multitouch feature may or mayn’t be available on handsets being sold in US, like Motorola released separate version of Motorola Driod for European countries and other countries, European version of Droid also don’t support multitouch functionality.

Due to some agreement, she was not allowed to capture video or picture of the phone, but she has confirmed the following hardware specs of the unit she tested.

  • Nexus One is extremely thin, thinner than Droid and iPhone 3GS.
  • Comes with 4GB microSD card as pre-installed.
  • Battery capacity is 1400 mAh
  • Capacitive OLED screen with almost the same size and resolution as the Motorola Droid.
  • 3G will work only on T-Mobile USA. No 3G on AT&T (EDGE only).
  • It is unlocked. You can use it with any carrier you like.
  • It appears to work faster than Motorola Droid.
  • No multitouch in Browser and Maps.
  • No dedicated physical key for camera.
  • The trackball works almost exactly similar to other HTC phones like HTC Hero.
  • 5 MP camera is on board. The performance of camera is decent in low light, but the flash is weak.
  • It uses micro USB connector for both data and power

Nexus One is expected to be released on 5th Jan, 2010 with a price tag of US $199. We’ll share more including unboxing of brand new Nexus One, as soon as it arrives in market

Driving Direction On Google Maps Launched

Google Maps India has launched driving directions feature enabling users to look for directions on the map. The feature was first introduced in Mapmaker (around Feb timeframe) and the same is now available on Google Maps.

In India, Google has collected good landmark data through user-created “Points of Interest” in Google Map Maker. Google’s new algorithm determines which of these landmarks are most useful for navigation, based on importance, and closeness to the turns that the user is making and other available signals. With this launch, Google will now combine landmark data, counted turns (“the 2nd right”), intersection names, and road names, and try to use whatever information is most relevant and useful.

Google is providing two kinds of landmarks, to identify where users need to turn, and to provide confirmation that they’re on the right track. Google also encourages users to help make directions even better for millions of users in India by enriching landmarks data via Google Map Maker.
