Geohot Returns with Limera1n Jailbreak for All iOS Devices

Well-known hacker Geohot has come out of retirement to haunt Apple once again, Geohot, 21, whose real name is George Holtz, has returned to the jailbreaking scene once again after announcing his retirement in mid-July of this year.

And the prolific hacker has returned with some new things and this time it’s a new jailbreak called “Limera1n.” Although Limera1n is not a one-button exploit like many of its peers but it allows the users an “unpatchable” way to install third-party software onto their iPhones.

Geohot released Limera1n a day after jailbreaking crew Chronic Dev Team announced the release of their iOS 4.1 jailbreaking software tool, “Greenpois0n.” This tool is set to go live today. But Geohot has managed to beat the Chronic Dev Team by designing a jailbreak, which is much more universal in its appeal than the Greenpois0n tool.

It is to be noted that Greenpois0n has only been designed to work with devices running version 4.1 of Apple’s iOS operating system and it will work only on devices, which are loaded with an A4 chip on the inside. It means that the Greenpois0n can be used only on the iPhone 4, the fourth-generation iPod, the iPad, and Apple TVs. It will not work on iPhone 3G or 3Gs. But Geohot’s Limera1n works with all devices running version 4.0 of the iOS operating system or higher (save for the iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G).

According to reports, the Chronic Dev Team is working to use the exploit made by Geohot into its Greenpois0n tool before releasing it. “Hopefully we can get Geohot’s exploit implemented and release greenpois0n tomorrow, cleaning up the mess he made,” reads a message on the Chronic Dev Team’s Twitter account.
