Microsoft Warns users about Fake Security Essentials 2010 Antivirus

Microsoft has warned users about the fake antivirus program know as Security Essentials 2010 which is quite similar to Microsoft’s security protection software. The programs contains a trojan Win32/Fakeinit.

According to David Wood at Microsoft’s Security:

Well, it had to happen eventually. One of the oldest tricks used by rogue antivirus products is to use a similar name as, or have a similar look and feel to, legitimate security software. It’s been commonplace for them to mimic the Windows Security Center. So it was inevitable that the day would arrive when a rogue would masquerade as something similar to Microsoft Security Essentials. If anything, it surprises me a little that it’s taken so long.

The program looks something like this:

“Fakeinit’s downloader not only installs the fake scanner component – it also monitors other running processes and attempts to terminate the ones it doesn’t like, claiming that they are infected.”

The original Microsoft Security Essentials 2010 is free and can be download from the links given below:

Microsoft launches MSN Juku :A twitter like service powered by Windows Live Messenger

Microsoft has launched a microblog / twitter style service in China based on Windows Live Messenger, expanding the social-networking functions linked to the chat software in a china where it is a hit.

The Twitter like service from Microsoft , is currently in beta and offers the following features:

  • Post 140 character messages.
  • The posted messages from various contacts appear on an update screen.
  • Share pictures, videos, and links with their friends
  • Alert contacts as to additional exciting content and websites they come across on the web
  • Messages on the update screen move from left to right.
  • Posts are stacked from top to bottom and display only first few words.
  • To view the full length message, point the mouse at a condensed message.

Juku, which is currently in beta, brings several other innovations to the table; it lets users play games and earn prizes, something that sounds like science-fiction for the traditionally feature-shy Twitter. However, at this point, Microsoft hasn’t announced any plans to internationalize the service and perhaps position it as a direct competitor to Twitter.
