Being the excellent software that it is, WordPress gives you the ability to ‘Auto Upgrade’ to the latest version.WordPress 2.9 Released so Follow this step by step information to upgrade it.
- Backup your database – this is very important, you should always backup your database before attempting to do any major changes to your blog and that includes and especially upgrading.
- Equally important is to always backup your wodpress files.- with all major changes, make sure you have a copy of all your blog files backedup – use an ftp and download all your files onto your hard drive.
- Deactivate ALL the plug-ins. This is where most people fail – you must deactivate all your plug-ins as they may conflict with the upgrade process.
Once you have all the 3 steps above covered and completed you are now ready to upgrade your wordpress installation. Now feel happy to go back to your admin panel and click on the “Automatic upgrade” button.
Sometimes and on some servers this does not work and this is due to the server set up by your host and is not a wordpress issue. In this case you will need to perform the upgrade manually. I think upgradation is very simple and does not require any sort of tutorial for it …. but as u have written it .. i think some real noobers will be helped by it

Backup is needed. But Deactivate ALL the plug-ins? Seriously? I just click 1 button to upgrade.

there is no rules to deactivate all the plugins but if you are updating to new version and your some of plugins is not updated and they may give you some problem at time of up gradation so it’s better we Deactivate ALL the plug-ins
