Google has finally announced that now Linux user can also access the Google video and chat services in gmail, Up until till now, the service has only been available for Windows and Mac OS X users.

Google also mentioned that RPM support is coming soon although no specific dates have been mentioned.

“Since sometimes reading “lol” doesn’t deliver the same punch as actually hearing your friend laugh at your jokes, you can now use voice and video capabilities in your Gmail, iGoogle and orkut chat,” says Google’s information page.

“From within these services, you can have an actual conversation with someone (seriously, out loud), or even chat face to face over video.”

Ubuntu (Ubuntu) and other Debian-based Linux (Linux) distributions are supported, with RPM support coming soon. To try it out, download the required plugin at gmail.com/videochat.
